Insecurity: Nigerians entitled to bear arms, protect themselves legally – Presidency

Presidential aide Daniel Bwala has asserted that Nigerians have a constitutional right to self-defence and may lawfully apply for licences to bear arms for personal and community protection amid rising insecurity.

Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has declared that Nigerians have the constitutional right to defend themselves and can lawfully apply for licences to bear arms for personal and community protection.

Bwala made the remarks during an interview on Arise News while addressing growing public concern over escalating insecurity, including recent schoolchildren abductions and teacher killings in Oyo State.

He said, “The Constitution grants every Nigerian citizen the right to private defence. You have the right to defend yourself.”

He added that communities could organise as lawful vanguards by applying to the government for licences to bear arms permitted under the law.

Bwala assured Nigerians that the federal government remained committed to restoring safety and public confidence across affected areas.
