Federal Government prosecutor alleges El-Rufai’s family weaponized social media and press engagements to undermine public confidence in the judiciary over his detention.
The trial of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai took a dramatic turn Tuesday when the lead prosecuting counsel, Oluwole Aladedoye, SAN, accused members of his family of orchestrating media campaigns against the judiciary at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Aladedoye cited an incident where one of El-Rufai’s wives allegedly livestreamed claims at the ICPC facility that her husband was being denied food and family access. He also alleged that politician Timi Frank published claims the former governor could be harmed in custody.
The defence counsel said he was unaware of the allegations, adding that “the defendant himself should not be held responsible for comments made outside the courtroom.”
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik stated she “pays no attention to social media narratives,” directing that the trial continue. The court subsequently admitted a silver flash drive and certificate of compliance as exhibits.
