The United States has named Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin as major fronts in its 2026 counterterrorism strategy, warning that ISIS remnants displaced from Iraq and Syria are exploiting weak governance across Africa.
According to Sahara Reporters, the United States government has identified Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin as critical theatres in its newly released 2026 counterterrorism strategy, raising fresh concerns over escalating extremist activity across the continent.
The strategy document warned that terrorist groups driven out of Iraq and Syria had relocated to Africa and Central Asia, exploiting ungoverned territories.
“As a result, today, there are parts of Africa where a resurgent terror threat is the reality. These include in West Africa, the Sahel region, the Lake Chad Basin, Mozambique, Sudan, and of course Somalia,” the document stated.
The US also referenced Nigeria specifically, commending action taken against attacks on Christian communities, with President Trump quoted as saying: “I have previously warned these terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughtering of Christians, there would be hell to pay.”
Washington said it would maintain a light military presence while pushing African governments to take greater counterterrorism responsibility.
