Muslims in Nigeria will begin the 2026 Ramadan fast on Wednesday, February 18, following the sighting of the new moon, the Sultanate Council of Sokoto has announced.
The palace of the Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III disclosed this in a statement released on Tuesday night, confirming that verified reports of the crescent were received from various parts of the country. The announcement formally sets the commencement of Ramadan 1447AH for Muslims nationwide.
“Reports of the sighting of the moon were received from various locations across the country,” the statement said. Based on the confirmed reports, the council declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan in Nigeria.
Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a sacred month of fasting from dawn to sunset, prayer, charity, and spiritual reflection. The month represents one of the five pillars of Islam and is marked by increased devotion and communal worship.
