El-Rufai has urged Obi and Amaechi to abandon one-term pledges, warning that governance requires more than four years to achieve meaningful results.
Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has cautioned ex-governors Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi against making pledges to serve only one term in office, insisting such promises lack credibility. Speaking on Channels Television on Sunday, El-Rufai argued that four years is insufficient to implement meaningful reforms.
“On the question of people coming out and saying I will do one term, I don’t think anyone believes that. I don’t think it is right. You should not constitutionally give up what is yours,” he said.
Drawing from his two-term experience, El-Rufai maintained that governance requires sustained effort and long-term planning. “As someone that has been governor for eight years, and Amaechi and Peter Obi have both been governors, they know the time it takes to make meaningful change in government. Four years is not enough,” he added.
He urged politicians to avoid premature promises about tenure, stressing that focus should remain on party strategy and governance.
