Indonesian finance minister’s home looted as protests escalate

The home of Indonesia’s finance minister was looted amid nationwide protests sparked by a police killing, in the biggest unrest of President Prabowo’s tenure.

The residence of Indonesia’s finance minister was looted overnight, soldiers guarding her home and a witness told AFP on Sunday, as unrest over police conduct widened to target lawmakers.

Southeast Asia’s largest economy has been shaken by days of demonstrations after the death of motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan, who was run over by police during a rally against financial perks for parliamentarians.

The protests, which have spread to multiple cities, mark the most intense challenge yet to President Prabowo Subianto, less than a year into his administration. Violence has escalated, with anger that initially focused on the police now extending to members of parliament.

Security forces were deployed to protect government officials and institutions, but tensions remain high as demonstrators vow to continue until their demands are addressed.
