Naked, bleeding, alone: Unanswered questions surrounding physiotherapist’s death at Minister Umahi’s home as police insist on autopsy

The Ebonyi State Police Command has declared it will proceed with a post-mortem examination on 26-year-old physiotherapist Mary Habila — who died at the residence of Works Minister Senator David Umahi — overriding her family’s opposition and citing the deeply suspicious circumstances of her death, including her being found naked with blood on her nose and mouth.

The circumstances surrounding the death of a young physiotherapist at a federal minister’s residence are becoming harder to ignore — and the police are not backing down.

The Ebonyi State Police Command on Wednesday insisted it will conduct a post-mortem examination on Mary Habila, 26, whose body was discovered at the Uburu residence of Minister of Works Senator David Umahi, according to a statement signed by police spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu and obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday.

The command was first alerted on June 27 after the DPO of Ohaozara Division received a distress call about a medical emergency involving Habila at David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital, Uburu.

What investigators found painted a deeply disturbing picture. According to legal advice from Ebonyi State Director of Public Prosecutions J.U. Chukwu, Habila was found alone, “lifeless on the floor of her apartment naked with blood stain on her nose and mouth.” Crucially, there was no prior indication of illness. “She was full of life at the time she returned to Uburu in company of her team,” the DPP stated.

The DPP’s advice crystallised the central mystery: “What exactly caused the deceased sudden death?”

Habila’s family has opposed an autopsy — but the police were unequivocal. “The Command nonetheless considers the examination necessary, given the sensitive nature of the case and the imperative of establishing the true cause of death,” the statement said, adding that investigators await the family’s presence or an authorised representative before proceeding.

Detectives have already visited the scene and obtained statements from relevant persons. The body has not been released to the family pending the examination.

“The Ebonyi State Police Command assures the public of a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation,” the statement concluded.
