Badenoch: Migrants On Temporary UK Visas Shouldn’t Get Automatic Indefinite Stay
UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has said immigrants, including Nigerians, on temporary work visas should not automatically gain indefinite stay in Britain, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.
In a June 13 letter to the Home Secretary, Badenoch opposed Labour’s plan to exempt about two million immigrants from a 10-year qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain, per the report.
She argued five years was “too short a time” for such rights, warning many immigrants work low-wage jobs that could go to Britain’s economically inactive citizens, NAN reported. Badenoch said ILR currently grants full benefits entitlement and warned a U-turn would trigger a surge in claims taxpayers “cannot afford to fund,” according to the report.
Her comments drew mixed reactions on X, with some accusing her of hypocrisy given her own immigrant background, NAN reported.
