Bandits abducted my brothers, demanded ₦300m ransom – Governor Dauda Lawal recalls 2019 incident

Governor Dauda Lawal says he refused to pay a ₦300 million ransom when bandits kidnapped his brothers in 2019, using the ordeal to push for state police.

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has revealed that bandits abducted two of his brothers in 2019 and demanded a ₦300 million ransom for their release. Lawal said he refused to negotiate or pay the abductors, despite the emotional toll on his family.

His brothers spent three months in captivity before they were released without any ransom being paid. Lawal maintained that giving in to kidnappers only emboldens criminal groups and encourages further abductions nationwide.

According to Daily Post, Lawal used the experience to renew his call for state police, arguing governors should have direct operational control over security agencies if they are held responsible for protecting lives and property.
