Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has warned that the proposed state police system could fail without guaranteed financial autonomy, leaving it vulnerable to manipulation by politicians, businesses and criminal networks.
Bamidele Warns State Police Needs Funding
Bamidele has a blunt warning for Nigeria’s state police push: fund it right, or watch it fail.
According to a report by The Punch, the Senate Majority Leader said at Thursday’s ARISE NEWS Townhall that state police “may as well be a highway to nowhere” without sustainable funding. He explained the ongoing constitutional amendment simply shifts policing from the Exclusive to the Concurrent Legislative List, giving states the option — not obligation — to create forces.
Bamidele proposed fixed budget allocations to guarantee funding independent of governors’ control, while stressing accountability requires both strong legislation and active citizen oversight. He added that success also hinges on genuine local government autonomy.
