Lagos Assembly backs state control over police services

The Lagos State House of Assembly has endorsed the proposed establishment of state police, insisting that states retain full authority over recruitment, appointments and operational control.

Lagos Assembly Backs State Police Bill

Lagos lawmakers are firmly backing state police. The House of Assembly endorsed the proposal on Wednesday, insisting states must retain full control over police administration, according to Vanguard.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa praised President Tinubu and the National Assembly for advancing the Constitution Alteration Bill, but called for clearer rules on when the Federal Government can intervene. He proposed that governors appoint Commissioners of State Police, subject to confirmation by State Houses of Assembly, with senior officers also screened legislatively.

The Assembly dismissed fears of politicisation, noting similar criticisms already trail the current centralised system. Lawmakers urged all 36 state assemblies to fast-track the bill, saying state police would strengthen community policing nationwide.
