Stop addressing me as Hausa man, Kukah tells Nigerians

Bishop Matthew Kukah clarified his non-Hausa heritage and pledged to advance Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University’s goals during his formal installation as Chancellor.

During his formal installation as the Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University at its 16th convocation ceremony, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Kukah, clarified his ethnic identity, urging Nigerians to cease mislabeling him as a Hausa man. Highlighting his roots in the Ikulu Chiefdom of Kaduna State, Kukah stated, “I am a typical Nigerian from Anchuna, Ikulu Chiefdom in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State, but not a Hausa man by origin. Nigerians should stop addressing me as a Hausa person.”

The Bishop, who was decorated by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, also lauded Anambra State’s educational performance and committed to elevating the institution’s standards, noting, “As the new Chancellor of this institution, we will not only strive to achieve the university’s goals, but surpass them.” Governor Soludo expressed confidence in the Bishop’s moral leadership, emphasizing the ceremony as a celebration of excellence and the critical role of universities in shaping character and advancing knowledge.
