Ghana’s President John Mahama is pressing the African Union to confront what he calls “escalating” xenophobic violence in South Africa, according to Vanguard News. His comments came as two Ghanaians petitioned the ICC to investigate the attacks — a move South Africa has dismissed as “opportunistic.”
More than 160,000 foreign nationals have fled South Africa amid weeks of unrest, with several killed in the past two months. Mahama said the AU should place the issue on its February summit agenda, warning it “has the potential to wreck” African solidarity and integration.
Ghana recently postponed a visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa following a Ghanaian national’s death.
