Power Minister Adelabu resigns

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, effective April 30, 2026, to focus on his gubernatorial ambitions in Oyo State in compliance with the amended electoral law.

Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has officially tendered his resignation to President Bola Tinubu, effective April 30, 2026, to pursue the governorship of Oyo State. In a letter routed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Adelabu expressed a “deep sense of honour and profound gratitude” for the opportunity to oversee reforms in the power sector, which he described as “one of the most critical foundations of Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic transformation.”

The decision to step down is driven by his long-standing political aspirations and the legal requirements of the Amended Electoral Act 2026, with Adelabu noting, “My decision to step down is informed by my intention to focus fully on my gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State.” While thanking the President for the “privilege and confidence” reposed in him, Adelabu emphasized that his early departure is intended to “allow sufficient time for a smooth and orderly handover of responsibilities” before he transitions fully into the next electoral cycle.
