Health authorities in Cross River State have isolated a Chinese national at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) following a suspected case of COVID-19.
The Cross River State Government has confirmed the isolation of a Chinese national at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) due to a suspected COVID-19 infection. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, revealed on Tuesday that the patient is currently under close medical observation and receiving treatment. The individual reportedly arrived in Nigeria through Lagos on March 17, 2026, before traveling to a factory in the Akamkpa Local Government Area, where symptoms were first identified at a local clinic. The case was promptly escalated to the tertiary facility to prevent potential community transmission.
In response to the development, the state has activated its public health response mechanisms, including rigorous contact tracing and enhanced surveillance. The World Health Organization (WHO) coordinator in the state, Dr. Olatunde Yewande, alongside the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong, confirmed that the emergency systems are now fully operational. This resurgence of isolation protocols recalls the initial 2020 outbreak that led to nationwide lockdowns, though officials have stressed that they are working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to keep the current situation contained.
Dr. Ayuk assured residents that there is no cause for alarm, stating that all necessary medical procedures are being strictly followed. Health officials reminded the public that COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can manifest as fever, cough, fatigue, and breathing difficulties. Affirming the state’s readiness, Ayuk said: “We have activated all necessary procedures, including contact tracing and isolation, to prevent further spread.” He further added that the government remains committed to containing any potential outbreak and maintaining public safety.
