Panic in Oyo community as wild elephant kills one, attack residents

A wild elephant attack in Oyo State’s Innayin Community has killed one resident and left another missing, prompting search efforts and emergency response by security agencies.

A wild elephant invasion in Innayin Community in Oyo State has left one resident dead and another missing, with security agencies launching search and containment efforts.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer Ayanlade Olayinka, saying it occurred at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and prompted a joint response involving police operatives, local vigilantes and hunters. According to the command, the lifeless body of 45-year-old Ibrahim Tijani was discovered in a nearby bush with injuries consistent with an animal attack and evacuated to General Hospital, Iwere-Ile, for examination and preservation.

Police said another resident, Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, 50, remains missing following an encounter with the elephant, while search and rescue operations continue. The command urged residents to remain calm, avoid affected areas and report any sighting of the animal to authorities, adding that the National Park Service has been contacted for expert support. Commissioner of Police Abimbola Olugbenga reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property as efforts continue to secure the community and prevent further casualties.
