The Lagos State Government has explained that recent flooding across parts of the state stems from rising water levels in the Lagos Lagoon, worsened by heavy rainfall and high tidal conditions.
LAGOS BLAMES RISING LAGOON LEVELS FOR FLOODING ACROSS STATE
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the flooding results from a natural phenomenon known as “lock-up,” which occurs when elevated lagoon levels block rainwater from flowing freely into the lagoon, according to Sahara Reporters. This, he explained, causes temporary flooding in low-lying communities across the state.
Wahab urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that floodwaters would recede once lagoon levels dropped. He also appealed to Lagosians to stop dumping refuse into drains, warning that blocked channels worsen flooding during heavy rains. Emergency response and drainage maintenance teams have been deployed to affected areas.
