INEC clears Amupitan of fake X account, launches hunt for impersonators

INEC has exonerated its chairman of links to a fake X account, describing the claims as a coordinated impersonation campaign now under investigation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, of allegations linking him to a partisan X account, following a forensic probe. The commission said it would track and prosecute those behind the impersonation, which sparked controversy after viral screenshots claimed the chairman posted “Victory is sure” on the platform.

INEC said an independent investigation found the claims “fabricated, technically impossible and part of a coordinated disinformation campaign.” The report stated, “The X account attributed to Prof. Amupitan is a clear case of impersonation.” It added that the alleged reply appeared 13 minutes before the original post, noting, “This is physically impossible on any digital platform.”

Further findings showed no verifiable link between the account and Amupitan’s personal data, while multiple fake accounts were identified across platforms. INEC confirmed the case has been handed to security agencies, stating, “The forensic evidence is comprehensive, multi-sourced and unambiguous.” The commission urged the public and media to avoid spreading unverified content.
