Nigeria’s Immigration Service is pushing back hard against fears that Ebola could slip into the country through weak border controls. According to Punch, the agency insisted Nigeria’s borders are “not porous” and said surveillance systems have already been tightened amid fresh Ebola concerns across parts of Africa.
Officials say screening measures at airports and border entry points are active, while health and security agencies remain on alert to quickly detect any suspected cases. The reassurance comes as anxiety grows online over the spread of the virus in parts of East and Central Africa.
The Immigration Service also urged Nigerians to stay calm, follow public health guidelines and avoid spreading panic or misinformation over the deadly disease scare
The service’s spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi said, “Our borders are not porous. Anyone who comes in through our borders is known. They must show proper documents, including an international health certificate. Our job is to man the borders and ensure that people who shouldn’t be in the country are not allowed into the country.”
