Bauchi: After resignation from Tinubu’s cabinet, ex-Minister Tuggar loses guber primary

Former Governor Mohammed Abubakar has clinched the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket for the 2027 election in Bauchi State, defeating former Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar and former NNPC top official Bala Maijama’a A. Wunti.

Former Governor Mohammed Abubakar has defeated six other aspirants to clinch the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket for the 2027 election in Bauchi State. Following an administrative delay that extended into the early hours, AIG John Abang (rtd), the Chairman of the APC Governorship and House of Assembly Primaries Committee for Bauchi State, officially announced the much-anticipated results on Saturday morning. Abang announced the figures as 57,517 votes for Abubakar, the outright winner; 26,001 votes for Tuggar, while Nura Manu Soro garnered 13,638 votes. The definitive victory positions the former governor as the main opposition spearhead in the state, signaling a high-stakes effort by the APC to reclaim the regional seat of power.

The highly competitive primary election featured a field of prominent political heavyweights and technocrats seeking to control the party’s structure ahead of the general polls. Other contenders in the race included Bala Maijama’a A. Wunti, who scored 13,648 votes, Kabir Baba Ma’aji with 8,157 votes, Baba Abubakar Suleiman who secured 7,688 votes, and Yakubu Yakubu Abdullahi who polled 7,181 votes. The outcome represents a significant political setback for

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the immediate past Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was among the first set of cabinet appointees to comply with President Bola Tinubu’s directive instructing those pursuing elective positions in 2027 to resign from public office before March 31, 2027.

The upcoming gubernatorial race sets the stage for a historic political rematch and a test of party dominance within the North-East state. Local political analysts recall that incumbent Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi had previously defeated the 2027 APC gubernatorial candidate during the 2019 general elections. In that foundational clash, Mohammed successfully contested and won the executive seat under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Abubakar lost out as an embattled incumbent governor running under the APC. With the primary process now officially concluded, the Bauchi State chapter of the APC faces the immediate task of reconciling aggrieved aspirants and consolidating its base to mount a unified challenge against the ruling PDP framework.
