Inside Rivers Crisis: Why Tinubu, APC withdrew support for Fubara

APC insiders say Governor Siminalayi Fubara lost President Bola Tinubu’s backing and was denied support for a second-term bid after allegedly violating reconciliation terms reached during the Rivers political crisis.

Fresh details have emerged on why Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara allegedly lost the backing of President Bola Tinubu and the APC leadership in his prolonged feud with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

APC sources told Sunday PUNCH that Fubara fell out with party leaders after allegedly reneging on reconciliation terms reached during earlier interventions by Tinubu.

An APC National Working Committee member claimed the President handed Rivers political structure to Wike and advised Fubara to focus on governance instead of party control.

The source said, “Agreement is agreement,” alleging Fubara had agreed not to seek a second term as part of efforts to end repeated impeachment threats.

The report also claimed Fubara was not cleared by the APC screening committee for the 2027 governorship race, prompting his withdrawal from the contest.
