Senegal president dismisses Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, dissolves government

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has dissolved the government and dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko following months of escalating political tensions.

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dissolved the government and dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko on Friday amid growing tensions within the ruling PASTEF party.

According to Saudi Gazette, Faye exercised his constitutional powers to remove Sonko to preserve national stability following disagreements over governance and economic policy. Presidential Secretary-General Oumar Samba Ba confirmed that a new cabinet would be appointed soon, noting, “The members of the outgoing government are responsible for handling current affairs.”

The decision ends a powerful political alliance that took power in 2024. Following his ouster, Sonko reacted on social media, writing: “Alhamdoulillah (All praise is due to God). Tonight, I will sleep with a light heart in the city of Keur Gorgui.”
