Senegal PM accuses West of imposing homosexuality

Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has accused Western nations of trying to impose homosexuality on Africa while defending a controversial new anti-LGBTQ law.

Ousmane Sonko has accused Western countries of attempting to impose homosexuality on Senegal while defending the country’s newly enacted anti-LGBTQ law.

Addressing Senegal’s National Assembly, Sonko described the move by Western nations as “a kind of tyranny.”

“There are eight billion human beings in the world, but there is a small nucleus called the West which, because it has resources and controls the media, wants to impose it [homosexuality] on the rest of the world,” he said.

The law, signed in March by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, increases prison terms for same-sex acts from five to 10 years and bans the “glorification” or funding of homosexuality, bisexuality and transsexuality.

The legislation has drawn criticism from international rights groups and the United Nations.

UN rights chief Volker Türk warned the law could expose people to “hate crimes, abuse, arbitrary arrests, blackmail, and widespread discrimination.”
