Nigerian nurses set for nationwide protest over withheld certificates, welfare crisis, government neglect
Thousands of Nigerian nurses have announced a nationwide protest on June 1 over the government’s failure to constitute the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria board, leaving graduates without certificates for over three years.
Thousands of graduate nurses across Nigeria have scheduled a nationwide protest for June 1, 2026, over the continued withholding of professional certificates and years of neglect within the country’s healthcare sector.
The Elegant Nurses Forum, in a statement signed by South West Zonal Coordinator Abdul-Azeez Olalekan, blamed the Federal Government’s failure to constitute the NMCN board, leaving many nurses unemployed and unable to pursue opportunities at home and abroad.
“Nurses have endured poor welfare, exploitation, intimidation and neglect for too long. We refuse to continue suffering in silence while those responsible for this crisis show no urgency in resolving it,” the statement said.
The group demanded immediate constitution of the NMCN board, issuance of withheld certificates, and compensation for nurses who lost opportunities due to the delay, warning that “peaceful protest is not a crime.”
