The United States has warned that ISIS remnants are regrouping across West Africa and the Sahel after their defeat in Iraq and Syria, exploiting weak governance structures across the region.
According to Sahara Reporters, the United States has raised fresh alarm over resurging extremist networks across West Africa, warning that ISIS fragments displaced from Iraq and Syria have found new footing on the continent.
In a new counterterrorism strategy document, Washington identified West Africa, the Sahel, the Lake Chad Basin, Mozambique, Sudan, and Somalia as flashpoints.
“Today there are parts of Africa where a resurgent terror threat is the reality,” the document states.
The US identified ISWAP and Boko Haram as active ISIS-linked provinces operating across the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin — a region that includes parts of northern Nigeria.
Washington outlined two core objectives in Africa: preventing jihadist groups from launching attacks against American interests, and protecting Christian communities from extremist violence.
