‘We can’t let criminals win’: Trump defiant after White House shooting, vows dinner’s swift peturn

President Trump vowed to reschedule the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shortly after a shooting incident at the Washington Hilton forced a high-profile evacuation of top U.S. officials.

President Donald Trump confirmed Sunday that the White House Correspondents’ Dinner will be rescheduled following a harrowing security breach at the Washington Hilton, asserting that “we can’t let these criminals and these really bad people change the course of events in our country.” The event was abruptly halted Saturday night when a gunman, identified by authorities as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, attempted to breach a security checkpoint with multiple weapons, leading to the evacuation of the President, Vice President JD Vance, and Cabinet members.

Reflecting on the chaos that sent thousands of guests diving under tables, Trump criticized the lone actor as a “very disturbed person” and suggested his family “should have reported him a little bit more strongly” regarding his alleged anti-Christian and anti-administration sentiments. While some attendees reported security lapses involving minimal ticket verification, the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) has praised law enforcement for their swift response and promised a full review, with WHCA President Weijia Jiang noting, “Their actions protected thousands of guests, and we wish a full and speedy recovery to the officer who was injured in the line of duty.”
