That’s the takeaway from Dennis Amachree’s new memoir, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield, which claims Sani Abacha believed his “impenetrable security detail” made him invincible — until death “kept its appointment.” Amachree also questioned why conflicting accounts of Abacha’s death spread among top aides and generals, calling it part of a wider Nigerian culture of misinformation, according to Punch.
More strikingly, he alleges Abacha secretly engineered a self-succession plan, forming five political parties — each instructed to adopt him as their presidential candidate — to fake a democratic transition.
