ECOWAS heads of state have signed an intergovernmental agreement backing the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP) project during the ECOWAS Summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Morocco’s ONHYM and Nigeria’s NNPC announced the deal in a joint statement Sunday, according to The Cable.
The pipeline is designed to carry up to 30 billion cubic metres of gas yearly from Nigeria and West Africa through 13 countries to Morocco, with 15 bcm reaching Moroccan and European markets via an existing Morocco-Spain link.
The Freetown signing marks the next phase, including setting up a project company in Casablanca and a governance body in Abuja, paving the way for investor mobilisation.
