Tinubu Seeks Reps’ Backing For State Police Bill
President Bola Tinubu has formally sent the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026 to the House of Representatives, according to Channels Television.
In a letter to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Tinubu said the bill amends the 1999 Constitution to create a legal pathway for state police services, building on the House’s earlier work while adding safeguards for a dual policing system.
He described the legislation as central to his administration’s security reform strategy and urged lawmakers to expedite its passage. The move follows the Senate’s approval of a similar bill two weeks ago, which secured the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments.
