Suspected herdsmen kill 10 in Otukpo communities in Benue State

No fewer than 10 people have been confirmed dead following separate attacks by suspected armed herdsmen on communities in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to Daily Post, the latest violence began on Saturday when suspected herdsmen invaded Akpachi village in the Ugboju community. Two people were killed during the attack, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Less than 24 hours later, the attackers reportedly struck again. In the early hours of Sunday, they invaded the Otukpo Nobi community, where eight more people were killed and several others injured, bringing the death toll from the two incidents to 10.

The attacks sparked outrage among residents, with angry youths and community members taking to the streets in protest. The demonstrators marched to the Och’Idoma Palace in Otukpo town to express frustration over the deteriorating security situation and demand urgent intervention from the government.

The fresh attacks come about a month after the killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo Risku Mohammed, and his associate, Yakubu Isah. The pair were reportedly attacked around Okwudu in Otukpo Local Government Area after attending a peace meeting in neighbouring Ohimini Local Government Area.
