Tinubu picks Shettima again, ends speculation over 2027 running mate

President Bola Tinubu has retained Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, ending weeks of speculation over a possible change, according to a statement by Presidential spokesman Sunday Dare.

President Bola Tinubu has formally retained Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, putting an end to weeks of speculation that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could field a different vice-presidential candidate. The development was confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, in a post on X after the party received Tinubu’s nomination forms in Abuja.

The submission of the nomination forms marked the official commencement of Tinubu’s bid for a second term on the APC platform, with Shettima once again completing the party’s presidential ticket. According to Dare, “About now, at the Continental Hotel, Abuja, President Tinubu submits INEC nomination form to the APC NWC as Sole Presidential Candidate for the 2027 Elections. President Bola Ahmad Tinubu has equally tapped Kashim Shettima, the current Vice President, Senator as his running mate for vice president in the 2027 election.”

The announcement effectively lays to rest reports that the President was considering replacing Shettima over political calculations ahead of the election. The speculation had intensified after some APC stakeholders, including voices from the North East, withheld endorsements for the Vice President, while others suggested Tinubu might opt for a northern Christian as his running mate.

On Friday, the President’s Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Ibrahim Masari, submitted the nomination forms for both Tinubu and Shettima to APC leaders at the Continental Hotel in Abuja. According to the Presidency, governors and senior party leaders present included Hope Uzodimma of Imo, Mai Mala Buni of Yobe, Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano, Nasir Idris of Kebbi, Uba Sani of Kaduna, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa and Babagana Zulum of Borno, alongside members of the APC National Working Committee, the Progressive Governors’ Forum, the Federal Executive Council and the party’s National Assembly caucus. The submission formally confirms Tinubu and Shettima as the APC’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general election.
