Police in Delta State have arrested a 31-year-old man, Chukwemeka Destiny, for allegedly plotting to kidnap his aunt who raised him, after the supposed kidnappers turned him over to authorities.
Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a 31-year-old man, Chukwemeka Destiny, for allegedly plotting to kidnap his aunt, the woman who raised him for a decade. Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said the suspect paid ₦900,000 in two instalments — an initial ₦200,000 deposit and a subsequent ₦700,000 — to individuals he believed were kidnappers to carry out the abduction. However, Edafe said the men instead alerted authorities and handed the suspect over to police, foiling the alleged plot.
“Unknown to him, the people he contacted were not kidnappers,” Edafe said. “They used him as bait, lured him in and handed him over to the police, thereby saving the life of his aunt.” According to police, Destiny lived with his aunt, his mother’s elder sister, from age five until he turned 15 before leaving the household and losing contact with the family. “All of a sudden, something came to his mind that he should kidnap his aunt who trained him and saw him through school,” Edafe said. When questioned, Destiny admitted involvement in the plot, saying, “Sincerely speaking, I am guilty of what happened. I don’t know what came over me,” adding that the funds came from his haulage and building materials business.
The suspect’s aunt said she was devastated upon learning of the alleged plot and struggled to contain her emotions. “I was shocked, crying,” she said, rejecting calls for leniency and insisting authorities should allow the law to take its course. Police described the case as part of a troubling pattern of violence involving relatives and benefactors, while investigations into the matter continue.
