Makinde admits regret over support for Tinubu in 2023

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said he regrets supporting President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, stating that the decision did not yield the outcome he expected. Makinde made the disclosure on Tuesday while speaking with journalists at the Government House in Ibadan.

Makinde was one of five Peoples Democratic Party governors, known as the G5, who worked against their party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the election. The group opposed Atiku’s candidacy over zoning concerns, insisting the presidency should return to the South after former President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure.

Explaining his decision, Makinde said he believed Tinubu would act in the national interest if elected. “I said it earlier, I’m human. I supported the current president… because I thought we’ll do what is right for the country,” he said, adding that he expected a national “reset.”

The governor, however, said the expectation had not been met. “But unfortunately, that is not what we’re seeing. I regret that action. Yes, I do,” Makinde stated, adding that Tinubu would not have his support in 2027 and outlining his disagreement with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over PDP affairs.
