Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped death in a car crash in Nigeria after switching seats in an SUV driven by his longtime driver, Kayode Adeniyi, who has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s licence.
The collision on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, both 36, soon after they had arrived in Lagos.
Court documents revealed that Joshua initially sat in the front passenger seat but moved to the back at the request of Adeniyi, who said he could not see the wing mirror properly because of the boxer’s size. Adeniyi denied all charges in court, claiming, “the brakes on the vehicle had failed.”
Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries and was discharged from Duchess International Hospital on Wednesday, later visiting a funeral home to pay respects to his friends.
Adeniyi, 47, who is part of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, was discharged from hospital on New Year’s Eve and granted bail after his court appearance on Friday, with proceedings adjourned to January 20.
His son, Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, defended his father, saying, “Dad is not a fast driver, he was following the speed limit and then the brakes failed…They were only a few minutes from arriving. It’s not his fault, if the truck wasn’t parked there illegally this wouldn’t have happened. The family is very upset by what’s happened and we are sorry for the deaths of the two people.”
The bodies of Ghami and Ayodele were repatriated to Britain via Istanbul on Friday morning.

This is a tragedy from all perspectives. I wished the son of the driver would be quiet because his utterances are annoying. Was the son in the vehicle with them or he providing a 3rd party account? How would the trailer be packed illegally on the shoulder of the road almost a car distance from the main road? The driver was complicit and should take his share of the blame and face the consequences. I pray the deaths of two men will not be in vain. This is not Nigeria’s fault, this is people not following orders, reckless driving, and always in a hurry to get to their destinations. May the Lord comfort all impacted.
