INEC heads to Appeal Court over ruling on election guidelines

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has filed an appeal at the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn a Federal High Court judgment that nullified parts of its election guidelines for the 2027 general elections, Leadership Newspapers reports.

The lower court had ruled that INEC’s directive requiring political parties to submit membership registers and databases by May 10, 2026, was unlawful, stating it violated provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

Dissatisfied with the judgment, INEC, through its counsel Chief Alex Izinyon (SAN), asked the appellate court to set it aside and also stay execution of the ruling pending determination of the appeal.

The case follows a suit filed by the Youth Party challenging the legality of the electoral commission’s directive.
