Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, has died at the age of 50 in Türkiye after a long illness and has been laid to rest in Kano.
The Federal Government has announced the passing of Mohammed Mahmud Lele, Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador-designate to Algeria. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Lele, a distinguished career diplomat, died in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, following a protracted illness. His remains were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who lauded the deceased as a hardworking and humble officer.
Born in 1976 in Bauchi State, Ambassador Lele was an Economics graduate from Bayero University, Kano, with an illustrious career that spanned missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh. Before his recent appointment by President Bola Tinubu and subsequent Senate confirmation, he served as the Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division. The ministry described his death as a monumental loss to the Foreign Service, citing his intellectual depth and commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
Lele was laid to rest in Kano on Wednesday afternoon in accordance with Islamic rites. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has extended its condolences to his family and the government of Bauchi State, noting that his absence would be deeply felt across the diplomatic community. His passing at age 50 marks the end of a career characterized by strategic insight and dedicated service to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
