Digital footprints link INEC Chairman to pro-APC X account

Digital footprints link INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan’s personal data to a partisan X account, sparking a controversy that the commission has officially denied while referring the matter to security agencies.

Investigation into claims that Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Joash Amupitan operated a partisan X account during the 2023 elections has revealed a strong correlation between his personal contact information and the account’s recovery details, despite official denials. Digital forensics linked Amupitan’s publicly available phone number and University of Jos email to the two-factor authentication recovery data for the account formerly known as @joashamupitan, which reportedly posted “victory is sure” in support of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before being renamed @Sundayvibe00 and locked.

While AI tools like Grok attributed the handle to the Chairman, INEC has dismissed the allegations as a fabrication by impersonators, asserting that “The INEC Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X. He has at no time engaged in partisan commentary, nor has he ever associated himself with any political leaning or activity in his private or public capacity,” though no independent forensic report has yet been released to verify the commission’s stance.
