Six face treason charges in alleged plot to overthrow Tinubu

The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge against six individuals, including senior security personnel, over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.

The Federal Government has instituted a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against alleged plotters of a coup aimed at ousting President Bola Tinubu. Among those charged are a retired major general, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector, and three other suspects accused of waging war against Nigeria and committing offences bordering on treason and terrorism.

The development follows months of investigations into the alleged plot, which first came to public attention in October 2025 after the government cancelled a planned parade to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary. While initial reports linked the cancellation to a coup attempt, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) denied any connection at the time. However, subsequent disclosures confirmed that several military officers had been arrested over the alleged conspiracy, with some still reportedly at large.

In January 2026, the DHQ acknowledged the existence of a plot to overthrow the government, stating that investigations had identified personnel involved, who would face appropriate judicial processes. In March and April, family members of detained officers staged protests and appeals, urging authorities to grant the suspects a fair and open trial, as well as access to legal representation and their relatives.
