Zainab Abdullahi, a teacher at Government Girls’ Day Secondary School in Gusau, Zamfara State, has died after reportedly being struck by a recklessly driven Nigerian Army vehicle whose occupants allegedly fled the scene without rendering assistance.
A teacher, Zainab Abdullahi of Government Girls’ Day Secondary School (GGDSS), Tudun Wada, Gusau, Zamfara State, has reportedly died after she was allegedly struck by a Nigerian Army vehicle being driven recklessly while she was on her way to school.
SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred on Wednesday in front of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau.
A source familiar with the incident said the Army vehicle allegedly ran over the teacher while she was riding on a motorcycle, adding that the soldiers in the vehicle drove away from the scene without stopping to render assistance or ascertain her condition.
“It was a Nigerian Army vehicle. They hit and killed Zainab through reckless driving. She was on her way to school when the vehicle ran over her in front of FMC Gusau. The soldiers drove off without stopping,” the source said.
The source added that Zainab later succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the crash. Her funeral prayer was held on Wednesday at her family residence behind Man Dinawa in Gusau, where relatives, colleagues, friends and sympathisers gathered to pay their last respects.
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools said it received news of the teacher’s death with great shock and sadness, condemning the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Authority of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools received this information with great dismay and calls on the Zamfara State Government and the Nigerian Army to investigate the matter and ensure justice is done to this noble teacher,” the union stated, praying for the repose of her soul.
Zainab’s death has left colleagues, students and members of the education community mourning the loss of a teacher whose life was cut short while travelling to work.
When SaharaReporters contacted the Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Onyechi Appolonia Anele, she did not respond to phone calls or a text message sent to her.
