Works Minister David Umahi has renamed the 750-kilometre, ₦15 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declaring the project a 27-year-old presidential vision now taking physical shape.
Nigeria’s most expensive road project has a new name — and it belongs to the president.
Works Minister David Umahi announced Thursday that the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has been officially renamed after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing the president’s long-standing personal connection to the project.
“By the power conferred on me as the Honourable Minister of Works, and in consultation with the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, the directors and the entire staff of the ministry, we have decided to name the entire Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Umahi said at a ministry briefing.
He added: “This is a dream that Mr President had about 27 years ago.”
The highway, estimated to cost ₦15 trillion upon completion, stretches across Nigeria’s southern coastline and has been one of the Tinubu administration’s flagship infrastructure projects since groundbreaking in March 2024. A section of the road is near completion.
Daily Post reports that the project has not been without controversy since its commencement, facing scrutiny over cost, procurement processes, and its environmental and displacement impact on coastal communities.
The naming announcement was made by Umahi — himself currently at the centre of a separate public controversy over the death of physiotherapist Mary Habila at his Ebonyi residence.
