First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has revealed that she quietly supported an unemployed graduate turned akara seller in Abuja, who now employs 12 people, while urging wealthy Nigerians and celebrities to set up foundations to help the less privileged.

Speaking on Saturday on the importance of supporting small businesses and vulnerable Nigerians, the First Lady said she came across the graduate’s story in an article, where he explained that he took up akara selling because he couldn’t find a job.
Moved by his story, she said she and her team reached out to him directly, but deliberately kept her involvement private.
“There was once I read an article about a young graduate who said he didn’t get a job. And he said he sells akara because he couldn’t get a job, and he’s in Abuja,” she recounted.
“We approached him, but I didn’t put my name to it. We equipped him more. He now has 12 workers working under him, and he’s doing very, very well,” she added.
Beyond recounting the story, the First Lady used the moment to appeal to wealthy Nigerians, particularly successful entertainers, to channel their resources into uplifting struggling citizens and easing the pressure on government.
Daily Post reports that she specifically singled out international and local music stars, urging them to establish charitable foundations dedicated to supporting the poor.
“I will use Akon, a music icon, who does a lot of great charity work. Then the Burna Boys of this world, Asake, all of them, Davido. We want to see you with one foundation or the other, helping the poor with your money,” she said.
