South Africa’s High Commission in London has ceased operations after its historic Trafalgar Square building became unsuitable for staff, sparking DA accusations of years of government neglect.
South Africa’s London Mission Shuts Amid Neglect Row
South Africa House just went dark — and the opposition isn’t staying quiet. According to P.M. News, the Democratic Alliance says the London mission shut down without notice this week, citing intermittent water supply, faulty heating, and a lingering urine smell across offices.
Restoring the landmark building will reportedly cost nearly R70 million, a bill the DA blames squarely on DIRCO’s years of neglected maintenance. The party also flagged South Africa’s Hague embassy, shuttered for nearly a year with no visible repair work.
The DA accused the ANC-led government of prioritizing foreign political alliances over basic upkeep, calling the state of South Africa’s missions abroad “a shell of its former glory.”
