Oriire rescue incomplete without mental health support — NBA

The Nigerian Bar Association’s Ikirun Branch has called on the Federal and Oyo State Governments to build trauma rehabilitation centres for the rescued Oriire schoolchildren and teachers, warning that physical rescue alone isn’t enough.

The children are home — but the healing has barely begun. According to Tribune Online, the NBA’s Ikirun Branch praised security agencies for rescuing the over 40 victims after 56 days in captivity, but warned that untreated psychological trauma could deeply scar the mostly young survivors.

“The societal victory of their physical rescue remains incomplete until comprehensive, long-term measures are taken to heal their invisible wounds,” the Branch said, calling the abduction a systemic failure of constitutional duty.

The NBA recommended four steps: fully funded trauma centres, deeper interrogation of arrested suspects, security upgrades in rural schools, and audits ensuring security funds aren’t wasted on “administrative overhead.”
