Tuggar set to quit as Foreign Affairs Minister to run for Bauchi governor

Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar is expected to resign from President Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue the Bauchi governorship seat in the 2027 elections.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is set to submit his resignation to Bola Tinubu on Monday as he prepares to pursue the governorship of Bauchi State in the 2027 elections. A source close to the minister said the move is part of his plan to contest the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

“Mr Tuggar will submit his resignation letter to the president today. He will be contesting in the governorship election in Bauchi in 2027,” the source said. The resignation follows a directive from the administration requiring political appointees seeking elective offices to step down.

Earlier in March, Bola Tinubu directed appointees intending to contest the 2027 elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026. The instruction was issued through a circular by George Akume, citing provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the election timetable released by Independent National Electoral Commission.
