Controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has said foreign involvement cannot be ruled out in terror attacks in Nigeria. Gumi made the claim in a post on X, stating that the country is on the radar of some Western nations for clandestine operations aimed at justifying external intervention.
He was reacting to comments by a Kaduna-based activist, Mahdi Shehu, who accused a former American envoy, Russell Hanks, of masterminding the 1995 bombing of a bookshop at Durbar Hotel, Kaduna, during the regime of late Head of State, Sani Abacha. Gumi noted that the allegation was never publicly addressed.
“Terror Attacks on Worshippers. Don’t rule out foreign involvement,” Gumi wrote, adding that Nigeria’s sovereignty and resources could be targets. He claimed such actions are designed to “prove the need for intervention,” alleging that embassies could be used to evade scrutiny in covert operations.
