Shock in Abuja as police nab armed robbers who stole N10m from businessman; culprits are ‘IGP’s boys’

No fewer than two police officers attached to the Force Intelligence Department (FID) are currently being detained in Abuja over allegations of extortion, armed robbery and kidnapping for ransom, according to findings by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ). The officers, identified as Adamu Sani and SP Austine, are accused of stealing N10 million from an Abuja-based businessman in August 2025 and are under investigation for multiple suspected criminal acts.

FIJ gathered that the two officers were part of an FID team that allegedly broke into the residence of Lukman Abubakar on August 15, posing as officials of a power distribution company. After gaining access to the house, the officers reportedly bundled Abubakar and took him to their office, where he was allegedly detained and threatened with being handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if he failed to pay N10 million for his release.

Faced with the threat, Abubakar was said to have raised the demanded sum through phone calls to contacts. Because the officers allegedly insisted on cash payment, his wife reportedly withdrew N10 million from a point-of-sale (POS) operator at a cost of N85,000 before the money was handed over as ransom.
