The Yobe government has confirmed a notorious sexual exploitation syndicate at Potiskum Correctional Centre. Governor’s adviser Abdulsalam Abubakar revealed the scandal after a warder allegedly impregnated a female inmate. The Nigerian Correctional Service has already suspended several officers for unprofessional conduct. “If a warder can impregnate an inmate, it shows abuse of trust, negligence of duty, and lack of proper supervision,” Abubakar stated.
Investigations suggest a wide network of collaborators, including female warders, rather than a single perpetrator. Authorities believe the abuse was exacerbated by personnel overstaying at their duty posts and influence from highly placed individuals. “It is a network; not one person is involved. There are many other collaborators, including female warders,” the security adviser explained during the briefing.
The state government is working with the Ministry of Internal Affairs to ensure those responsible face justice. Officials expressed optimism that the ongoing investigation will lead to police prosecution for all guilty parties. “If there is supervision, there is no way a male prison warder can go into the female section,” Abubakar added, emphasizing the need for stricter oversight.
