The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin to support the government following an attempted coup. According to a letter sent to the chamber on Tuesday, Tinubu said the troop deployment was requested by President Patrice Talon and aligns with ECOWAS protocols as well as “section 30 sub 5 of Nigeria’s constitution,” after consultations with the Defence Council.
Lawmakers immediately referred the request to the committee of the whole for consideration and granted approval without delay. Nigeria had earlier provided air support after the unconstitutional breach in Benin, reinforcing its commitment to regional stability and collective security.
