‘Remove Burna Boy from playlists’ –DJs ban singer’s songs over clash with DJ Tunez

The Nigerian DJ Association has announced a temporary global ban on Burna Boy’s music following a reported physical altercation between the singer’s crew and DJ Tunez at a Lagos nightclub.

The Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ) has announced a temporary ban on all Burna Boy songs, directing disc jockeys across Nigeria and the diaspora to immediately remove the artiste from their playlists. The directive follows a reported physical altercation involving the singer, his crew, and Michael Babatunde Adeyinka, popularly known as DJ Tunez, at a private event in Lagos on Monday night. Eyewitness accounts and unverified videos circulating online suggest that a disagreement inside a nightclub—identified as “Obi’s House”—escalated into a violent confrontation where DJ Tunez was allegedly assaulted. Reacting via an Instagram statement on Tuesday evening, the association expressed unwavering support for DJ Tunez, stressing that the industry must uphold mutual respect and professional dignity.

In its strongly worded statement, the NDJ characterized the ban as a necessary measure to protect the rights and safety of its members. The association invoked themes of universal human rights and equality to justify the boycott, arguing that no individual should be subjected to hostility or discrimination. “Dear NDJ, No one is born hating another because of the skin colour, religion, background or gender. People simply learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can also be taught to love since love comes naturally to the human heart more than its opposite,” the statement read. The body further emphasized its “ALL DJs are EQUAL” mantra, noting that it would not tolerate any actions that undermine the justice and opportunity of its male or female members, whether perpetrated by fellow DJs or non-members.

The association has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident before reconsidering the artiste’s status on national and international playlists. Until then, the ban remains in full effect as a gesture of solidarity with DJ Tunez, who is a prominent figure in the industry and the official DJ for Wizkid. “Burna Boy’s music is temporarily out of any of our DJs’ playlists till further notice. Our team will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident that occurred last night involving one of our own, DJ Tunez,” the NDJ declared. While the music industry awaits a response from Burna Boy’s management team, the NDJ has urged all disc jockeys to remain vigilant and reject prejudice, warning that progress in the profession is impossible when its members are held back by harassment.
