Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has declared he does not believe in prayer, describing some forms of public worship as “performative.” The singer, son of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, made the comments in a trending video on December 24, 2025, explaining that dramatic worship gestures appear staged to him.
“I have never prayed before in my life, I don’t believe it works,” Kuti said. He criticised worship practices involving kneeling and rolling, adding, “All this eye service wey Una dey do, wey Una go go kneel down for ground, dey roll for ground, dey shout, they’re all childishness.”
The musician stressed that spirituality is a personal journey rather than outward display. “Your life is the prayer. What you do with your life is the prayer,” he stated, positioning personal conduct and life choices as the true expression of spiritual belief.
